I've seen what I was - I know what I'll be

"I've Seen It All", Bjork e Thom Yorke

I've seen it all, I have seen the trees,
I've seen the willow leaves dancing in the breeze
I've seen a man killed by his best friend,
And lives that were over before they were spent.
I've seen what I was - I know what I'll be
I've seen it all - there is no more to see!

You haven't seen elephants, kings or Peru!
I'm happy to say I had better to do
What about China? Have you seen the Great Wall?
All walls are great, if the roof doesn't fall!

And the man you will marry?
The home you will share?
To be honest, I really don't care...

You've never been to Niagara Falls?
I have seen water, its water, that's all...
The Eiffel Tower, the Empire State?
My pulse was as high on my very first date!
Your grandson's hand as he plays with your hair?
To be honest, I really don't care...

I've seen it all, I've seen the dark
I've seen the brightness in one little spark.
I've seen what I chose and I've seen what I need,
And that is enough, to want more would be greed.
I've seen what I was and I know what I'll be
I've seen it all - there is no more to see!

You've seen it all and all you have seen
You can always review on your own little screen
The light and the dark, the big and the small
Just keep in mind - you need no more at all
You've seen what you were and know what you'll be
You've seen it all - there is no more to see!

Iraque: 655 000

Throwing oranges into the sea

In one of many reports and accounts of economic life in the Gaza Strip that I have recently read, I was struck by a description of an old man standing on the beach in Gaza throwing his oranges into the sea. The description leapt out at me because it was this very same scene I myself witnessed some 21 years ago during my very first visit to the territory. It was the summer of 1985 and I was taken on a tour of Gaza by a friend named Alya. As we drove along Gaza's coastal road I saw an elderly Palestinian man standing at the shoreline with some boxes of oranges next to him. I was puzzled by this and asked Alya to stop the car. One by one, the elderly Palestinian took an orange and threw it into the water. His was not an action of playfulness but of pain and regret. His movements were slow and labored as if the weight of each orange was more than he could bear. I asked my friend why he was doing this and she explained that he was prevented from exporting his oranges to Israel and rather than watch them rot in his orchards, the old man chose to cast them into the sea. I have never forgotten this scene and the impact it had on me.

Politkovskaya, a 48-year-old mother of two, was murdered on Saturday, Mr Putin's 54th birthday. Perhaps the assassin had a grim sense of occasion. (...)

Politkovskaya's relationship with the government was never easy as she openly called for Mr Putin to be replaced and begged him to remove Ramzan Kadyrov, the Moscow-backed Chechen prime minister she accused of kidnapping, torturing, and murdering civilians. (...)

Her murder will reinforce fears about the dangers that Russian journalists face. It is the most high-profile killing of a journalist since the US-born editor of Forbes Russia, Paul Klebnikov, was gunned down in Moscow in 2004. That murder, like that of almost every journalist killed to order since 2000 when Mr Putin came to power, remains unsolved. (...)

Silenced opponents of the Kremlin

Dmitry Kholodov

Following an anonymous phone call to his office in October 1994, the journalist travelled to a Moscow train station to collect what he thought was a briefcase of documents that would help him in his exposés of corruption within Russia's military. The briefcase exploded, killing him and wounding a colleague. Six military officers were acquitted of his murder in 2004.

Larissa Yudina

Her battered body was found in June 1998, a day after she failed to return from a meeting with an anonymous caller. She had been stabbed and had a fractured skull. As editor of the only non-government newspaper in Russia's autonomous Kalmykia region, she had made powerful enemies. Members of the Kalmykia president's inner circle were later implicated in her death.

Galina Starovoitova

A human rights campaigner and leading liberal politician, she was gunned down by hired killers in November 1998 as she left her apartment in St Petersburg. Supporters claimed the killing could only have been political because she had few business interests. Although two hitmen were eventually jailed for her murder, no one has been prosecuted for ordering the killing.

Sergei Yushenkov

As co-chairman of Russia's leading opposition party, Liberal Russia, Yushenkov was a fierce critic of the Kremlin. He had lambasted what he saw as increasingly anti-democratic legislation and was extremely critical of the Russian government's wars in Chechnya. He was killed in April 2003 by a shot to the chest outside his Moscow apartment. Four men were convicted of his murder.

Paul Klebnikov

The US-born editor of Russia's Forbes magazine was shot outside his office in July 2004, just three months after taking up the position. No one has been convicted of his murder and, even as he lay dying, he was unable to think of anyone who might order such an attack. He had written extensively on crime and corruption following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Andrei Kozlov

The deputy chairman of Russia's Central Bank had made it his mission to clear up the corrupt banking system and was murdered last month for doing so. Two gunmen opened fire on his car as he left a football stadium. One week earlier he had called for a lifetime ban on bankers found guilty of tax crimes and fraud. He had also taken away licences from Russian banks he thought to be corrupt.

Censura

The French Embassy on Monday canceled a New York party for a book about Vichy France's collaboration with Nazi Germany because of the author's postscript that says Israel has oppressed Palestinians. (...)

"The French Cultural Attache read it and he was incredibly complimentary," said Callil, who was born in Australia and moved to London where she founded feminist publisher Virago Press and ran publisher Chatto i Windus.

But Callil said Tuesday's party was canceled after "a series of letters from various Jewish fundamentalists complaining. They take a view that that no one can say anything about Jews that is not 100 percent complimentary." She did not identify the letter writers by name. (...)

A tristeza

Il me paraît bien loin l'été
Je ne l'ai pas oublié
Mais j'ai perdu la raison
Et le temps peut bien s'arrêter
Peut bien me confisquer

Nenhum miúdo é entregue a casais transviados. Ficam na Casa Pia e nas Oficinas de São José.

aLembra Portugal

E' a contaminacao funcional!

O "How're you!" sem significado, atirado em corrida ao qual e' suposto re-atirar "Fine" e vem-me a acotovelar-se 'a presenca da consciencia os inumeros "Tudo bem?" que tive de engolir irritada em Portugal. "Bom dia", digam simplesmente "Bom dia".

Indulgenciar

Informacoes aleatorias sobre mim:

1. Custa-me a apaixonar e a desapaixonar
2. Custa-me a adormecer e a acordar
3. Geralmente gosto de pessoas
4. Sou temperalmente como a lua
5. Detesto o uso desnecessario de estrangeirismos
6. O meu vicio e' procrastinar

ProntoS.

Mathematical Surfaces

Clicar para aumentar.

To most of us, a surface is something we can touch and attribute a shape to--the spherical surface of a ball or the toroidal surface of a doughnut. But there are innumerable surfaces that we cannot touch, or see, or even know of, because they are representations of mathematical functions. Mathematicians have long relied on their own powers of imagination to picture these abstract surfaces. Now, mathematicians such as Richard Palais of the University of California, Irvine, and graphic artists such as Luc Benard are exploiting the magic of computer graphics to recreate these abstract mathematical surfaces in familiar yet intriguing settings.

This illustration presents five well-known mathematical surfaces, rendered as glass objects in a highly realistic "Still Life." To create their chosen surfaces, Benard relied on the computer program 3D-XplorMath, developed by Palais for visualizing many of the most famous mathematical surfaces. He then exported these surfaces into a 3D-rendering program, using it to give the objects a glassy texture and place them on a virtual glass-covered wooden tabletop.
