Dois bons artigos

Minority Death Match: Jews, Blacks, And The “Post-Racial” Presidency, de Naomi Klein

Twice Branded: Western Women in Muslim Lands, de Judy Bachrach

Isso e' so' as vossas hormonazinhas a falar.

As mulheres dominam a medicina.

Elas começam a guiar autocarros e táxis.

Perdas no Iraque

Feminismo Pavlov

Birth control pill manufacturer Wyeth has whipped up a new product, Lybrel, that will not only prevent pregnancies but will apparently eliminate menstrual periods altogether. Does this development constitute a liberating break from biology for women or a subtle message that their bodies need to be somehow ‘fixed’?

New York Times: And studies have found no extra health risks associated with pills that stop menstruation, although some doctors caution that little research has been conducted on long-term effects.

The topic has, however, inspired an hourlong documentary by Giovanna Chesler, “Period: The End of Menstruation?,” currently screening on college campuses and among feminist groups.

Ms. Chesler, who teaches documentary making at the University of California, San Diego, said she became concerned about efforts to eliminate menstruation when she first heard about the idea several years ago.

“Women are not sick,” she said. “They don’t need to control their periods for 30 or 40 years.”

Of all the hormones that inhibit the reproductive system during stress, prolactin is probably the most interesting. It is extremely powerful and versatile; if you don't want to ovulate , this is the hormone to have lots of in your bloodstream. It not only plays a major role in the suppression of reproduction during stress and exercise, but it also is the main reason that breast feeding is such an effective form of contraception.

Oh, you are shaking your head smugly at the ignorance of this author with that Y chromosome; that's an old wives' tale; nursing isn't an effective contraceptive. On the contrary, nursing works fabulously. It probably prevents more pregnancies than any other type of contraception. All you have to do is do it right.

Breast feeding causes prolactin secretion. There is a reflex loop that goes straight from the nipples to the hypothalamus. If there is nipple stimulation for any reason (in males as well as females), the hypothalamus signals the pituitary to secrete proctalin. And as we now know, prolactin in sufficient quantities causes reproduction to cease.

The problem with nursing as a contraceptive is how it is done in Western societies. During the six months or so that she breast-feeds, the average mother in the West allows perhaps half a dozen periods of nursing a day, each for 30 to 60 minutes. Each time she nurses, prolactin levels go up in the bloodstream within seconds, and at the end of the feeding, prolactin settles back to pre-nursing levels fairly quickly. This most likely produces a scalloping sort of pattern in prolactin release.

This is not how most women on earth nurse. A prime example emerged a few years ago in a study of hunter-gatherer Bushmen in the Kalahari Desert of Southern Africa (the folks depicted in the movie 'The Gods must Be Crazy'). Bushman males and females have plenty of intercourse, and no one uses contraceptives, but the women have a child only about every four years. Initially, this seemed easy to explain. Western scientists looked at this pattern and said, "They're hunter-gatherers: life for them must be short, nasty, and brutish; they must all be starving." Malnutrition induces cessation of ovulation.

However, when anthropologists looked more closely, they found that the Bushmen were anything but suffering. If you are going to be nonwesternized, choose to be a hunter-gatherer over being a nomadic pastoralist or an agriculturist. The Bushmen hunt and gather only a few hours a day, and spend much of the rest of their time sitting around chewing the fat. Scientists have called them the original affluent society. Out goes the idea that the four-year birth interval is due to malnutrition.

Instead, the lenghty interval is probably due to their nursing pattern. This was discoverd by a pair of scientists, Melvin Konner and Carol Worthman. When a hunter-gatherer woman gives birth, she begins to breast-feed her child for a minute or two approximately every fifteen minutes. Around the clock. For the next three years. (Suddenly this doesn't seem like such a hot idea after all, does it?) The young child is carried in a sling on the mother's hip so he can nurse easily and frequently. At night, he sleeps near his mother and will nurse every so often without even waking her (as Konner and Worthman, no doubt with their infrared night-viewing googles and stopwatches, scribble away on their clipboards at two in the morning). Once the kid can walk, he'll come running in from play every hour or so to nurse for a minute.

When you breast-feed in this way, the endocrine story is very different. At the first nursing period, prolactin levels rise. And with the frequency and timing of the thousands of subsequent nursings, prolactin stays high for years. Estrogen and progesterone levels are suppressed, and you don't ovulate.

This pattern has a fascinating implication. Consider the life history of a hunter-gatherer woman. She reaches puberty at about age thirteen or fourteen (a bit later than in our society). Soon she is pregnant. She nurses for three years, weans her child, has a few menstrual cycles, becomes pregnant again, and repeats the pattern until she reaches menopause. Think about it: over the course of her life span, she has perhaps two dozen periods. Contrast that with modern Western women, who typically experience hundreds of periods over their lifetime. Huge difference. The hunter-gatherer pathern, the one that has occurred throughout most of human history, is what you see in nonhuman primates. Perhaps some of the gynecological diseases that plague modern westernized women have something to do with this activation of a major piece of physiological machinery hundreds of times when it may have evolved to be used only twenty times; an example of this is probably endometriosis (having uterine lining thickening and sloughing off in places in the pelvis and abdominal wall where it doesn't belong), which is more common among women with fewer pregnancies and who start at a later stage. (Remarkably, the same is now being reported in zoo animals who, because of the circumstances of their captivity, reproduce far less often than those in the wild).

"The Sanguine Sex"

Jerry Seinfeld used to have a routine about the television commercials for laundry detergents that promise the product will remove bloodstains from clothing. “I think if you’ve got a T-shirt with bloodstains all over it,” Seinfeld would say, “maybe laundry isn’t your biggest problem.” It’s a funny line, and it’s one that only a man could think of, because the real reason blood is such a vexing and eternal laundry problem doesn’t have to do with gunshot wounds or serial shaving mishaps (in the commercials, a witless husband is forever nicking himself shaving, usually wearing his best white shirt, the male equivalent of showering in your bra and panties). Bloodstains occur and recur in households because women spend a lot of their lives bleeding. If a man or a child woke up in a small pool of blood, the alarm would be genuine and well-founded. But if a woman does so, it’s business as usual. The bloodiness of menstrual blood is something that has been steadily de-emphasized in the past century, but blood it surely is. Once I walked into the students’ restroom at an all-girls school late in the afternoon on a warm day, and the smell that assailed me was reminiscent of the smell of Buckley’s, the butcher shop in Dublin where my mother bought Kerry beef running with blood.

A solução está no apoio às mulheres

Amara and the tens of thousands of Muslim women who support her loathe the fundamentalist vision of a "fascist-like society that has nothing to do with democracy"-and unlike many "Clash of Civilizations" blowhards, she and her friends fight against it on the ground, every day. Some of their fights are small everyday acts of defiance: "Make-up has become war paint, a sign of resistance." But many are larger: they reject the head scarf as "nothing more than a means of oppression emanating from a patriarchal society." Travel on the tube as it leaves the Muslim East End, and you will see girls peeling off their hijabs and applying makeup with heart-pounding pleasure.

Here is an authentic Islamic Reformation on the streets of Europe. Here is the development of a strain of Islam fiercely committed to democratic values. Yet those who suggest that the birth of every new European Muslim is a problem-another tick from the time-bomb-treat Amara as akin to Osama. This mind-set is (at best) a distraction from the real fight: across the continent, groups of Muslim women are rebelling in the same way against the literalist, quasi-fascist interpretation of the Koran popularized by the mullahs. Tired of being its first victims, they are creating their own liberal lived Islams as an alternative. And if this rebellion is completed, European jihadism will be left literally unable to reproduce itself.

Tolerancia (revisto)

Women, science and power in the Enlightenment" de Patricia Fara.

Ranging from astronomy in Germany and Poland to botany in Britain, Pandora's Breeches tells the story of women's contribution to science in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. [...]

Paradoxically, perhaps, before professionalization moved science out of the home and into universities and industrial laboratories, there was more scope for active involvement from women who had no wish to see a radical reorganization of society. By and large, Enlightenment women did not wish to do the same things as men. They had houses to run and, usually, families to tend. Fara's book is, for the most part, the story of publicly unrecognized workers; a world not of masculine genius and heroism, but of quotidian rounds in which women worked alongside men, forming intellectual networks with international scholars, and with each other.

Enlightenment science emerges, for the first time, as a family affair: the story of men and women whose lives were entwined in scientific enterprise.

Sisters who waited for their brothers to return from university in the vacations so they could talk about science; wives who assisted their husbands with scientific experiments in the domestic space of the home, and also acted as translators and educators, lab technicians, illustrators and editors. Some women actively sought stimulating alliances: Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle, advised women frustrated by their conventional education to marry the right man, as she had: from the privacy of her dining room she was able to participate in the scholarly debate she desired. Others had experimental science thrust on them. Charles Lyell made his wife, Mary, study geology during their engagement; she read and translated German for him, illustrated and edited his books, taught her maid to kill snails for scientific study, and became more expert than him in conchology. In the 1850s, Charles Darwin took over a kitchen shelf as a laboratory, used his children and pets for scientific study and probed the mothers of his extended family for information on their babies. His wife and her friends, also married to scientists, found themselves an unacknowledged editorial team as they read and discussed his work.

Pandora's Breeches reveals the extent to which such scientific giants as Descartes, Leibniz, Newton, Herschel, Lavoisier and Linnaeus were dependent on the patronage, support, or intellectual guidance of women whose contribution has been excluded by individualistic models of scientific discovery, with eureka moments -Newton, the apple and gravity being one perfect demonstration. [...]

Warning against refashioning neglected women as martyrs, Patricia Fara neither overstates nor undervalues their contributions, allowing them to remain embedded in the social and domestic structures and beliefs of their time. Her subjects are so diverse that no single narrative model suffices to tell their story; some are lone scholars, some reluctant wives, others aristocratic, erudite and sociable; and national differences presented different opportunities. But what she brings home is the domestic origins of experimental science: understanding how science started must involve looking at how families accommodated new investigations of the natural world. Pandora's Breeches is vital reading for anyone interested in the rapid growth of Enlightenment science, and the varied ways in which women indisputably affected the course of Western philosophy.

Mentalidade no séc.

E no sonho toda a gente ri. Sao tao bons os sonhos.

Coisas que nao entendo
